An open-plan kitchen extension in Parsons Green is won or lost on the plan, not the footprint. The choices are real ones: a wide clear span with a single beam versus a pair of narrower openings with a pier between; a downstand that reads as a defined threshold versus a beam lifted flush into the ceiling zone for an unbroken run. Each affects head height, cost and the temporary propping sequence during the build, and each is settled on the engineer's numbers rather than on hope.
Daylight is the problem that a deep kitchen-diner creates for itself. Combining the rear room and the side-return produces a plan that runs a long way back from the front of the house, and the middle of it goes dark unless light is brought in from above. Rooflights set over the cooking and dining zones, and full-height glazed doors opening to the garden, are what make the far end of the room usable rather than gloomy. Orientation drives the detail: a south- or west-facing rear can overheat behind a large expanse of glass, so the glazing specification, any solar-control coating and a modest overhang or brise-soleil are worked out alongside the openings, not bolted on afterwards.
Servicing is the part of a kitchen that no other extension has to solve, and it is where coordination earns its keep. Cooking needs proper ventilation — a ducted extract taken to outside air performs far better than a recirculating hood over an island, and the duct route has to be planned into the ceiling before the steel is fixed. The planning side is usually the smaller half of the story.
