Refurbishing a steel window: what the work involves
Steel window refurbishment is an established specialism and the process is worth knowing, because it explains both why it works and why quotations vary so much. The frames are usually removed from the opening and taken to a workshop, though on-site work is possible for smaller jobs. Old glass and putty are removed. The frames are then stripped back to bare metal, most commonly by shot or grit blasting, which reveals the true extent of corrosion — this is the point at which a frame is judged repairable or not, and it is why a proper quotation is often conditional on what stripping reveals. Corroded sections are cut out and new steel welded in, distortion is straightened, and hinges, handles and stays are repaired or replaced with matching ironmongery. The frames are then re-protected, ideally by hot-dip galvanising where the section and the job allow, or by a high-quality applied coating system, and finished in a colour appropriate to the house. Reglazing follows: either new single glass in putty for the closest match to the original, or a slim double-glazed unit where the section can accept one, which many original profiles can with a modified glazing bead. Draught seals are fitted into the frame during reassembly, and the frames are refitted and the perimeter made good and pointed. The result is a window that will run for decades with normal decoration, in the original openings, with the original sight lines. Two practical points. Lead time is longer than for replacement units, since this is workshop work, and the openings need boarding or temporary glazing meanwhile, so it suits a phased approach or a period when the house is empty. And the cost sits between a cheap replacement and a good one, which surprises owners who have been quoted for the cheap option and told repair is uneconomic.
