Making a wide glazed elevation comfortable all year
The glazed opening onto the garden is the defining feature of these extensions and the element most likely to make the finished room unpleasant if it is specified rather than designed. Four things resolve together. Solar control: south and west-facing glazing gains a great deal of heat in summer, and the answer combines an appropriate coating on the glass with geometry that shades it — a roof overhang, a deep reveal or a projecting element sized to block high summer sun while still admitting low winter sun, which is a straightforward calculation from the sun path. Ventilation: opening lights at one end of a room achieve very little, whereas openings positioned to create a path across or through the space, ideally with a high-level opening rooflight to release warm air, produce real air movement without air conditioning. Winter performance: a large glazed area loses heat even at good specification, so heating is designed for it, usually with underfloor pipework running near the glazing rather than a radiator on an internal wall where it does nothing about the cold surface. And rooflights need the same discipline, because horizontal glass gains substantially more solar heat than vertical for the same area — an unshaded run of rooflights over a south-facing kitchen is the commonest cause of a new extension that cannot be used on a hot afternoon. All of this is settled at design stage, where it costs drawing time rather than money.
