Where the air comes in, and why it is a design decision
Ventilation is usually treated as a services matter resolved after the plan is fixed, and on a house in an area with a persistent nitrogen dioxide problem that is the wrong order. The supply air intake is the point at which outdoor air becomes indoor air, and its position determines the quality of what the system delivers for the life of the building. Four principles apply. First, distance from the source: concentrations of traffic-related pollutants fall sharply with distance from the carriageway, so a rear elevation sheltered by the house itself is materially better than a front elevation facing the road, and on a terrace that difference is available at no cost because the duct simply runs the other way. Second, height: concentrations are generally lower higher up, so an intake at first floor or roof level is preferable to one at ground level beside a pavement. Third, separation from your own outlets: an intake positioned close to the kitchen extract terminal, a boiler flue or a soil vent will draw its own exhaust back in, which is a well-known failure and is avoided by keeping a proper separation between intake and every outlet, in accordance with the system manufacturer’s requirements. Fourth, filtration: mechanical systems with heat recovery filter the supply air, and the filter grade is something specified rather than assumed. A better filter removes more fine particulate, at the cost of a slightly higher fan energy and a more frequent change interval. That last point matters practically — a filter that is inaccessible does not get changed, and an unchanged filter is worse than none because it restricts flow. So the plant position, with real access to it, belongs on the plan alongside everything else. None of these decisions is expensive. All of them are effectively irreversible once the ducts are buried in a floor build-up.
