A successful rear extension in Clapham starts with the existing rear building line and the depth of garden behind it. The two-storey bay-fronted terraces that make up much of the stock are deep in plan and often retain an original back addition — the narrow rear wing housing the old scullery — so the back of the house is already stepped rather than a clean flat wall. The last consideration is sequence, and it is the one that most often saves money later.
