The goal of a Clapham kitchen extension is a single generous room where cooking and eating happen together and the garden feels part of the house. The obstacle is the shape of the terrace itself. Clapham's two-storey bay-fronted houses run deep front to back, with the original kitchen in a narrow rear return beside a side passage. Enlarge that into an open kitchen-diner and the middle room — the space between the front reception and the new rear — becomes the darkest point in the plan, because daylight now has to travel much further from either end. That daylight study drives the roof. The harder move is getting light back into the retained middle room: a rooflight set over the join between old and new, or a glazed link where the return meets the main house, pulls daylight down into the centre. We model these openings against the depth of the plan and the height available, because a rooflight in the wrong place lights the garden end beautifully and leaves the middle as gloomy as before. We also look at orientation: a rear that faces the low winter sun behaves very differently from one in shadow for much of the day, and the glazing and any shading are tuned to that so the room is bright without overheating in summer or losing its warmth in winter.
Layout comes next, and in a period terrace it is dictated by structure as much as by cooking. Removing the rear and return walls to open the room needs steel, and where that steel lands sets the rhythm of the kitchen: an island can sit under a downstand, or the run of units can align with a beam, but the two have to be resolved together. Waste and water runs for the sink, dishwasher and any utility have to reach existing drainage without crossing the room at an awkward level. We resolve the extract, the drainage and the underfloor heating manifold at the same time as the joinery, so the room that looks effortless is actually fully coordinated behind the finishes. Where the existing drainage runs shallow or the new floor sits low to meet the garden, we check the falls and any pump requirement at the outset, because a waste run that will not gravity-drain can quietly dictate the whole floor build-up if it is discovered late.
The other half of a good kitchen-diner is the space that keeps it calm. An open plan that has to hold the fridge-freezer, the recycling, the coats, the laundry and the noise of a dishwasher quickly stops feeling like the room in the brochure. Where the plan allows, we take a utility, a pantry or a boot-room off the main kitchen so the working clutter and the acoustic hum of appliances live next door rather than in the family room. On the deep Clapham plots that often means borrowing a slice of the side return or the rear, and it is one of the decisions that most affects whether the finished room feels generous or merely large. Acoustics matter here too: a big hard-surfaced open room can echo, so where the plan cannot spare a separate utility we look at softer finishes, an appliance recess with a door, and the position of the noisiest machines to keep the family end of the room civilised when everything is running at once.
Finally, the room has to sit well with its neighbours, because a rear kitchen-diner opens straight across the gardens on either side.
