A side-return extension in Fulham begins with the passage itself — the sliver of external ground running alongside the original back addition. Capturing it turns a narrow, single-aspect terrace room into a wider space, and on Fulham's remarkably uniform terrace stock that infill is the clearest way to gain useful width without projecting far into the garden. The reason it is not a simple move is that this strip is rarely empty ground. It commonly carries the drainage for the house and often for the neighbour too, the boundary and party wall sit within touching distance of the new flank wall, and the wall dividing the passage from the existing rear room has to be removed almost in its entirety. Drainage is the constraint that most often reshapes a Fulham side return.
