Where the plant goes, and why it matters more here
On a large house the mechanical services occupy real space and the decision about where they live has consequences for years. A modern system may include a heat pump with an external unit and an internal cylinder, ventilation equipment with ductwork, manifolds for underfloor circuits, water treatment, and controls — none of which fits in a kitchen cupboard. The right position is central enough that distribution runs are short and efficient, accessible enough that servicing does not require dismantling joinery, and acoustically separated from living and sleeping spaces, because heat pumps and ventilation units are not silent. On these houses the candidates are usually a former service room, a utility, part of a garage or outbuilding, or purpose-built space within an extension. What rarely works is a loft, because the loft is frequently the next project and plant installed there has to be moved, and because access for servicing is poor. External units have their own requirements: an appropriate position for airflow, a level base, and consideration of noise at the boundary. We fix the plant strategy early in the design because it determines routes through the house that then constrain ceiling zones, floor build-ups and joinery — all things that are cheap to arrange in advance and expensive to change afterwards.
