A Belgravia roof conversion usually comes down to three forms, and the right one is dictated by the building rather than by preference. Converting a roof changes how it carries load. Where the property sits within the Grosvenor estate or another freeholder's holding, estate consent and, for flats, a Licence to Alter sit alongside the planning and listed building applications, and the roof void above a top-floor mansion flat is usually demised to the freeholder rather than the flat, so it cannot simply be annexed. Mews houses raise their own question, since an added roof storey can overlook the principal houses behind and is judged against the low, subordinate character the mews was built to have.
